Reading under the Cosh

Paul Cosh

The band welcomed the highly respected professional trumpet player, teacher and conductor Paul Cosh to its rehearsal home of Christ Church Woodley on Thursday 10th February.

Paul was a Professor at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London for over 30 years, during which time he became the most sought after mentor and advisor to countless brass students and performers who benefitted from his wisdom and experience.

His latest book ‘Brass Essentials – An Arban Companion’ has quickly become one of the most sought after aids to help brass players develop what he calls ‘a solid technique’ – one based on good sound, good intonation and being technically correct.

These are the very musical qualities that the band has been making a concentrated effort to improve ahead of its performance in the third section at the London & Southern Counties Regional Brass Band Championships of Great Britain on Sunday 20th March.

It was therefore apt for the band to be put ‘under the cosh’ and benefit from Paul’s wealth of experience and brass band training, with a rehearsal working diligently through the main ‘facets’ of the test piece titled ‘Facets of Glass’ composed by Gordon Langford.

The band looks forward to another opportunity in the future to work with Paul.
